Synopsis:
The
WWE Championship was originally known as World Wide Wrestling
Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship. In 1971, the WWWF
reunified with the National Wrestling Alliance, and the title came to
be known as WWWF Heavyweight Championship. In 1979, the company
ended up with the "Wide" from its name, leading to the renaming of the
title for World Wrestling Federation (WWF) Heavyweight Championship.
After leaving the WWF NWA in 1983, the title came to be known as the
WWF World Heavyweight Championship. Beginning in the 90s, the title was
occasionally called the WWF Championship. When the title changed to the
belt "Attitude" in 1998, this family is World Wrestling Federation
Champion, no more taking the words "World Heavyweight".
